Band Of The Rising Sun

We are pleased to announce that the third installment of our Sloan Bootleg Vinyl series, Tokyo Japan 2002, will be released this Wednesday November 20th at 12 noon via our Sloan webstore. Recorded live from the audience at Club Quattro in Tokyo, this limited LP is pressed on to Japanese flag – style vinyl and is a hand numbered edition of 500 only. We won’t be making any more of these! Read below what our man Jay has to offer on the subject.

Sloan Bootleg #3 Pack Shot

“How about you, British man, is rock and roll dead again?” A broken-handed Chris posed this question to an English gentleman at our January 16th 2002 concert in Tokyo, Japan. To find out the correct answer, you’ll have to check out the 3rd installment of our Bootleg Vinyl series, an homage the great underground / illegal live LPs from the 1970′s and 1980′s. Captured during our 3rd adventure in Japan, this recording was taped live from the audience at Club Quattro in the heart of the Blade Runner-ish Shinjuku area of Tokyo. At the time, we were touring in support of our 6th album, Pretty Together. It’s an LP that, at the time, was thought to be a bit slick sounding, perhaps in relation to records like One Chord To Another or Navy Blues. If that’s a concern, then I would dare say this loud recording from the floor strips a bit of the polish off compared to the studio counterparts.

If that’s not enough, where else are you going to hear Patrick play the drums (on rarely aired Japanese-only track “Had Enough”)? Or a Chris / Andrew duo playing a Wurlitzer led version of “Life Of A Working Girl”? How about ye olde “Dreaming Of You”? (Have I even played it since?). I’d also argue that Andrew’s drumming on the controversial “Pick It Up And Dial It” is worth the price alone. In keeping with the bootleg spirit, it’s an audience recording with a bit of a rough quality….but I trust it won’t distract from enjoying the rocking proceedings.

Once again, this limited edition, hand-numbered LP comes packaged in a 70′s style heavy-stock white jacket with a risographed wrap around outer sleeve. The insert this time is a recreation of a charming Japanese fan letter and the concert is pressed onto Japanese-flag-white vinyl with a red label just in case you forget where this whole thing was laid down over 10 years ago!

Also, the record comes with a high quality digital download (mp3 or FLAC) of the whole LP, as well as 4 bonus tracks from the show (“Deeper Than Beauty”, “The Lines You Amend”, “People Of The Sky” and “Money City Maniacs”) that we just couldn’t jam onto the vinyl. Hope you all dig it as much as I dug the green tea soft serve ice cream.

Murderecords Singles and Ticket Link

I am looking forward to watching our murderecords singles books rolling off the press tomorrow. These will be available exclusively at our 21 Year Salute party at Toronto’s NXNE festival on Friday June 14th and then the rest will be sold directly through Sloan’s online store.

Advance tickets for the party are now available via our online store.

Murderecords – 21 Year Salute

2013 marks the year that Sloan’s murderecords label turns 21 years old. In celebration of that landmark birthday, we are throwing a party during NXNE at the Great Hall in Toronto on Friday June 14.

Performing will be Sloan (for the first time playing the inaugural murderecords release, Peppermint EP, in it’s entirety), The Super Friendz and Mike O’Neill (of murderecords alumni The Inbreds). Ben Gunning of Local Rabbits will be on hand to DJ thoughout the evening before and between the acts.

Festival wristbands are now available via NXNE, $20 tickets at the door.

To mark the milestone, Chris and I have been working on a book that serves both as a celebration of the twelve 7″ singles released by murderecords during the 1990′s and as a portfolio of Catherine Stockhausen’s photography that documented the artists involved as well as the east coast scene at the time. The book will also contain a 7″ single by The Certain Someones (super-group of Chris Murphy, Super Friendz’ Matthew Murphy & Jale’s Jennifer Pierce) that was recorded during the 1990′s, but never released until now. In addition, the book will also come with a digitally remastered download of all 28 tracks contained on all the 7″ singles (which have never been available in the digital realm before!) The book/7″single/download will be limited edition of 500 copies only. The book will be available at the concert.

Clipping at the heels of this project will also be another murderecords reissue …The Super Friendz debut LPMock Up, Scale Down available on vinyl for the first time as a remastered, 180 gram double LP with gatefold jacket and digital download. Sounds better than ever! One of the best LPs of the 1990′s. Also we unearthed an unreleased version of the song “Boots” that has been added to the LP. Once again, limited edition of 500 copies. Our imprint murderecords began in 1992 as an outlet to release Sloan’s Peppermint EP before we decided to jet off to test the major label waters with Geffen Records. In the meantime, murderecords became a platform for other underground artists from the east coast of Canada (and eventually beyond that border). While murderecords mainly serves as a home for Sloan currently, it was most active during the 1990′s during which we released EP’s, LPs and 7″ singles by artists such as Eric’s Trip, Hardship Post, Thrush Hermit, The Super Friendz, Hip Club Groove, Al Tuck, Stinkin’ Rich, Local Rabbits, jale, Zumpano, The Inbreds & Elevator Through.
